Okay! This is it— her first mission as a Ranger (kind of). Though not official by any means, Luka's work with annalise henderson had lit a fire under her. And if she's going to be any good at recruitment, she needs to have a better idea of what the job entails.[break][break]

The job as listed is a fairly simple one. Team Rocket had raided a farm outside Fallarbor and the owners need assistance in the aftermath. And Luka, along with another civilian she's never met (but who looks vaguely familiar) have stepped up to help.[break][break]

It makes sense that Rocket had targeted the little homestead. Fresh produce has been in high demand ever since the dome sprouted around Hoenn, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Luka finds herself pitying those that have to resort to such measures, but that doesn't mean she can condone their actions.[break][break]

She steps carefully over broken fence posts, surveying the damage with a frown. Farm buildings have been damaged and vandalized, and there's a char to the earth that suggests a fire. Stealing some dairy and vegetables shouldn't have caused this much destruction! The vast pastures are almost utterly devoid of life besides an errant scarecrow, all livestock having fled in the wake of the attack.[break][break]

The farm's Herdier bounds at her side, his tongue lolling out the left side of his mouth as he yips and runs in circles. Luka smiles a little, happy to see that a bit of hardship hasn't dampened the puppy's spirits.[break][break]

"Okay, um..." Luka fidgets with her cardigan and peers over the open fields, but still sees nothing. "I...to be honest, I have no idea where to start looking." She glances down at the Herdier. "Maybe we should let this guy take point?"[break][break]

This is not some grand gesture. It’s not a PR stunt, nor is it her having suddenly decided she’s a particularly charitable person. This is merely the fact that Fae often goes for hikes near Fallarbor, and when doing so she had had a few chats with some of the farmers in the area. She has gotten to like them enough that when she heard that one of the farms had been broken into, she had wanted to help.

”Aren’t you supposed to be a ranger?” Fae asks the pink haired woman when she states that she doesn’t know where to start looking. An eyebrow is raised, caring little for how accusatory she sounds as she stares at the other. The farmers had said a ranger would be coming to help, so she had just assumed.

She sighs, turning her attention to the Herdier. She crouches down in front of the pup, offering it one of the treats she had brought for her own Mightyena.

”That could work, he probably knows the area better than anyone and can find the Mareep for us.”
[break][break]
Fae stands, and after some consideration, she reaches into her pockets, retrieving a Dream Ball from which she releases the much larger canine. The Mightyena lightly wags its tail, greeting both the stranger and the familiar Herdier.

"Um. Kind of?"[break][break] Luka blinks, slightly taken aback by the other woman's blunt tone. She tries not to take it personally, so just smiles blithely back.[break][break]

Wait. No. She's doing a horrible job! Although her work with the Rangers mostly involves publicity, she's still representing them here, right? It'd be antithetical to create a bad impression. She needs to try harder![break][break]

"A newbie, though," she admits with a soft laugh. Lowering expectations, albeit unconsciously.[break][break]

"Cute ball, by the way! I love that pattern!" A love ball is produced from her own belt, and Luka releases the cotton-candy Mareep within (thank you Martín del Mar!). "It might help them feel safer," she suggests with a shrug. Or perhaps the pink baby's bleats will attract the other sheep to her? Either way, it can't hurt.[break][break]

"Okay. Um. The flock is...should be about twenty, I think. Hopefully they've all stuck together! I mean, m-most sheep do, right?" She grins in what she hopes is a decent impression of a Ranger's confidence. "Let's go!"[break][break]

A soft whistle is all it takes to get the Herdier started. For a moment he sits perfectly still, carefully sniffing the air. And then he bolts, tawny fur zipping through the grass as he nearly bowls over another scarecrow. The two women are left to chase after him before he becomes a mere speck on the horizon.[break][break]

”Hm. Makes sense.” It’s said in a terribly matter-of-fact way, because after all it is a fact: her being a new ranger explains why she seems so indecisive about things. ”Still better than most other rangers I’ve met.” Fae finds herself thinking, but that’s a pretty low bar anyway.

She does look at the other woman when the compliment is given, her gaze then turning to the adorable Mareep of wool akin to cotton candy.

Shame that the Herdier leaves them with little time to talk about all such things, since it runs off the moment the whistled command is given. Fae watches it as it runs past a scarecrow.

”Follow. Make sure you don’t lose him.” She tells her Mightyena, who is quick to do as she asks. With that said, she follows as well.

”So… This is your first mission or something, then?”

It’s both curiosity and small talk, since clearly they have a lot of walking to do.

Gushing over cute Pokemon and pink things will have to wait. But Candy Floss bleats happily and Luka puts a pin in their conversation, intent on revisiting it later. The thought that she might be able to make a new friend is always a cheering one.[break][break]

"Kind of," she answers with a little shrug. "I'm, erm...testing the waters, I guess? I've always been more of a pencil pusher," Luka explains, glancing out at the expanse of grass before them and the two canines ahead, which are steadily growing smaller and smaller. She picks up her pace to a brisk almost-jog. An advanced mall walk, if you will.[break][break]

"But with the way things are now, I just feel like I should be helping out more. Even the Rangers need good PR, right? And I kind of have some experience with this sort of thing. Sometimes it feels like just living in Hoenn gets you involved somehow!"[break][break]

It's more akin to getting dragged into increasingly catastrophic events by a chaotic god, or a writer with too much time on their hands. Either way, it's inevitable.[break][break]

"I mean...you're not a Ranger, right? And you're still kind enough to help out! I think that's so wonderful. We really need more people like you...mmn, but it's a big commitment, of course."[break][break]

Eyebrows form almost perfect arches when being told she’s “kind enough to help out” , and inevitably so, the sound of a dry chuckle rises in the air. Is that what she is now? Kind? Helpful? A philanthropist? Her manager would love to hear stuff like that; those are the kind of tricks he has always wanted her to use for the sake of her image.

”I guess? I just know some of the farmers.” She shrugs as if it were nothing, matching the other woman’s walking speed while watching both dogs up ahead. Cicero makes sure to pause once in a while to look back and make sure they’re following.

”I kind of get it? My sister’s a ranger.” Fae doesn’t show it, but the truth is that it worries her. A Ranger’s work is dangerous. ”Are you a talent manager or something? You sound like one with all the sugar-coating.”

It’s not an insult. Not really. The way she smirks makes it obvious: bluntly teasing.

It's also the truth, though. Luka does remind Fae of one too many people she's met before.

"Ohhh...is that so? Well, I'm sure they still appreciate it!" Luka lays on the saccharine sweetness, but doesn't push it much farther. If her companion wants to downplay herself, so be it! But she can't keep herself from rising in Luka's esteem regardless.[break][break]

"Is she? That's so cool! And I'm...yeah, something like that." The teasing she meets with a little grin of her own, though perhaps a little more bashful this time around.[break][break]

"I know what you're probably thinking! Like...oh, she's so fake, right?" Luka laughs softly and shrugs, her eyes fixing themselves on the horizon again. "It can't be helped, I guess. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I'd like to think I really believe in everything and everyone I'm helping represent."[break][break]

There's a pause, just a for a moment. The quickest hitching of her breath— but then the Herdier (leagues away by this point) starts to bark frantically. Luka snaps back to it and picks up the pace again, this time a brisk jog. She turns to her companion just as Candy Floss starts to bleat, and there's the faintest sound of baah-ing in the distance.[break][break]

When assumptions are made, she simply shrugs them off, but she also doesn’t bother with dispelling any misconceptions. There are none, after all.

”Nothing wrong with being fake if it gets the job done. Your job just happens to involve a whole lot of ass kissing.” She chuckles at that, not bothering to hide her familiarity with the profession. ”I could never do it, honestly. As you can tell, I’m too fucking blunt. My m–”

At that, she does pause, because Fae is aware enough to know that most regular people don’t have managers. Isn’t she supposed to be playing the part of an average Hoenn citizen? Then again, it’s not like she’s wearing a disguise or anything. If people recognize her, then so be it.

After quickly reaching up to tie her hair into a messy ponytail, Fae takes off after the Herdier. At least it’s a nice change from her treadmill.

Luka would like to pry a little more as they run. A sneaking suspicion is growing in the back of her head, but now really isn't the time. She makes a mental note to ask later as, far beyond the farm's property and up into the surrounding hills, fluffy white spots swim into view.[break][break]

And a few shapes more. Darker ones, long and lithe bodies emerging from the surrounding woods. The Herdier's barking grows louder now, not just an alert but a warning.[break][break]

"Shoot. Shoot! Um, okay! We've gotta hurry!"[break][break]

From yet another Love Ball, Luka releases her Dragonair. She wastes no time in scooping up her Mareep and hopping onto the dragon's pink, serpantine back, then glances down at her companion.[break][break]

"Do you have anything to carry you? If not, hop on!" She extends her hand to Fae, should the other woman need a lift.[break][break]

They say actors are the greatest liars, and that much is indeed true when it comes to Fae Madden, but perhaps the fact that her whole career has consisted of constantly lying has made her be a rather blunt and honest person when not acting. The art of misdirection and her do not vibe, and so the swift change of topic is more than welcome.

Swiftly she runs, but apparently not swiftly enough. Fae has never been particularly fond of riding pokémon. Today, however, calls for it. She takes Luka’s hand and swings herself onto the Dragonair as if with natural ease, and when looking in the direction of the distant Mareep, those bright yellow eyes of her squint.

Bringing her thumb and forefinger to her lips, she whistles loudly – loud enough for her Mightyena to hear her.

Cicero is quick to act, protecting the farm’s livestock from their attackers.

"Come on. The sooner we get them back, the better."
